Debatably, but not by me, the greatest rock critic of them all, the unparralled Robert Christgau, has ended his Christgau’s Consumer Guide. The last best piece of music criticism in the world. He wrote it for 41 years -that is a superb commitment to music.
I have read him religiously for decades and to my mind his CC of the 70s is among the best writing I’ve ever read ever by anyone.
There is nobody better than Christgau. Even the sainted Lester Bangs isn’t as good.
I have written very negatively about rock critics here. You know why? Because I love them as brothers in arm and am furious when they suck. And I love them because I am one. And I am one because Leonard Abrams, Dave DiMartino and Robert Christgau gave me a chance.
