Austin City Limits started off as a music show for PBS. PBS being the Public Broadcast System, a phrase that seems so antiquated in our high speed digital satellite world. But from humble beginings the show that brought us Blue Grass and Country evolved into the epitome of music for the masses.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, sensing this gradeur opted to archive all of the performances, and man oh man there are tons. So thanks for that.
Born of this humble start is the Austin City Limits Festival. This year held the weekend of October 4th. Unfortunately the final day was rained out but before that buzz kill some great things happened. Enter The Cure.
The Cure were one of those bands that were a staple in my teenaged world. Always crushing on frontman Robert Smith (such a sexy beast) while convinced he was gay (not). The songs of lament and angst were delivered in a croaky whine that went straight through the heart. Some called them goth (no) or emo (yeah, no) the fact of the matter is this band brought us some fantastic tunes and memorable shout outs. It pains me to this day that I did not get to see them in their prime- but then again it gives me something to whine about when times are happy.
Couple Austin City Limits and The Cue and you get this! A perfect set from a fab band. Smiths hair needing a good conditioning but otherwise aging as expected. Still adorable, still surreal playing guitar and still being a sexy beast. Watch the set here:
