Just when I thought Fall Out Boy couldn’t get any better, they do. They certainly know how to keep their fans on their toes, because they’re growing more and more unpredictable.
They released a video for their song “Love, Sex, Death”, and it’s unlike anything they’ve ever done before. I’ve been reading the oral history of the band and learned that Wentz played in a lot of hardcore bands before FOB- that would explain the influence for this tune. It’s fast and rough and absolutely punk rock. It has a gritty edge and Stump’s officially done everything with his voice. He can get the grumbly feel with the scratchy quality that’s so important for any punk song, with bursts of gorgeous held-out notes to accent it.
The drums are intense, in a way that only Hurley can pull off. He’s quite seasoned and after playing with FOB for so long, it must’ve felt good to go back to his roots and play harder stuff. The guitar solo is flawless, sharp and clean. Pete’s bass skills shine through because all of the instruments are on the same level- it’s like real classic punk was back in the day. It’s very traditional-sounding and I had no idea they could pull something like this off.
It’s a minute and twenty five seconds of pure energy, and I really hope they continue in this direction. The band is entirely unpredictable, and this step forward is something I believe will be an element in “Pax-Am Days”. It feels so natural for them and you can just tell that they’ve settled into a comfort zone that they’ve never touched before, at least not publicly.
