I almost wish I had gone to see this film with Iman. He touched on this June 6 and today I saw it.
Four days later and about a 180 degrees in opinion.
This film shook my shoes. Brand was amazing. Oscar worthy? No, this isnt this ‘that’ sort of film but believeable in his role as Aldous Snow.
A once mega rocker whose 1 dud of a song “African Child” killled his carrer.
Jonah Hill plays the short fat lame record company cubicle worker with his big shot to get Snow to the Greek Theater on the aniversary of his bands biggest selling concert. A great opportunity to capitolize on the former stars money power in tough times.
Those are the 72hrs from London, to New York, to Las Vegas to LA
Antics along the way were hysterical. Iman mentioned the shock sex in the bathroom stall, but what sent me laughing most was during the scene in Vegas where the fight ensues. I wont give details so I wont spoil it but this is the point where Brand shows the most dynamic transformation from raving lunatic, to compassionate friend, back to lunatic. Exhibited in this scene is the rockers ability to chameleon themselves til the lines of reality are blurred.
Its often debated that those who chose public life do so to compensate for a lack of love. They’re lonely and seeking the loyalty and admiration of the masses. An actor is just the same. Becoming someone else when the lights go down.
This film lightly touches on that issue. Not enough to drag Shirly Mclains hankey out, but enough for those of us with friends in the public domain to get a bit choked up. Its a fragile thing the ‘artiste’.
To constantly seek approval is a task in futility. You truly cant trust anyone. You hurt more people than you realize and in the end you’re only as good as your last million sale.
Had I saw this film with Iman I’d most likely have bawled on his arm and he’d have called me a jerk and handed me a popcorn stained napkin.
Its funny how a comedy can be so depressing. Dark comedy or dark reality?
We look up to these musicians, we write of them we laugh at their beards.
What everyone needs to realize is yes they’re human with real emotions and feelings but they have also chosen what they do.
Do we nod our heads and swoon for who they are or what they do?
I swoon for the image.
I walked out of that theater in love with rock and roll. The complete bi polar chaotic mess that makes adrenaline gush through your body.
Its dangerous, its hilarious, its filthy and its sad.
The message of the movie tells the nerdy record company boy that its OK to be a regular Joe. At least I think that’s what its saying, but me?
Ill always chase the mind fuck
