I could go on about how Fiona Apple is ridiculously underweight and how ironic it is that she is singing a tune from Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory for a fast food joint but I wont.
Instead I will say that Fiona’s version of this song is fantastic in a gritty Amanda Palmer sort of way. Lovely really with perfect accompaniment. Im not a Fiona fan, that heroin chic bit never sat well with me. But the tune is fantastic and what is blowing me away though is the fabulous advertisement its being used in.
Chipotle is a Mexican fast food restaurant (with vegan options!) that has a great reputation for being hip and trendy with clean food for clean people. Plus they have great music on their sound system. I once ordered nachos after eating simply because I wanted to hang out and hear more Clash tunes (no lie but I’m a hog anyway).
You may remember the Willie Nelson does Coldplay’s, “The Scientist” ad and this is the latest offering. An Apple app to save Crow Foods.
Chipotle’s statement?
“In a dystopian fantasy world, all food production is controlled by fictional industrial giant Crow Foods. Scarecrows have been displaced from their traditional role of protecting food, and are now servants to the crows and their evil plans to dominate the food system. Dreaming of something better, a lone scarecrow sets out to provide an alternative to the unsustainable processed food from the factory.”
This video shows genetic injection, factory farmed cows and the sad Scarecrow who is forced to keep it all hidden. Its a great game as well. It brings me great joy in a land full of McDonalds and KFC to see such powerful imagery supported by such powerful music.
