A Playlist For A Cold Wet June… In 2009 by Iman Lababedi

It was a year ago today and this is what I was listening to:

1. Lover’s Day – TV On The Radio – Prince would approve

2. You Don’t Love God (If You Don’t Love Your Neighbour) – Carl Story – Patrick Stickles purloined it for “Fear And Loathing In Mahway”

3. I Need To Know Where I Stand – Rhett Miller – His last great song.

4. Peacemaker – Green Day – Like a gypsy raping a cossack, I YI Yi Yi Yi

5. Forever and Always – Taylor Swift – I’ve never forgiven her for the crap concert.

6. Rise Above – Dirty Projectors – The Black Flag cover from before they were cool.

7. The Static Age – Green Day – And there is ONE MORE killer track after this on 21st Century Breakdown and then it breaks down.

8. Ink Stains – Regina Spektor – Best song of 2009.

9. Tenecula Sunrise – Dirty Projectors – By here they’re cool.

10. Just Snap Your Fingers – Marshall Crenshaw – Where are the Crenshaw fans? Where is the outcry over the ignoring of Jaggedland?

11. Leftovers – Jarvis Cocker – Best song off the last one and I make no bones about it.

12. Everybody’s Here – Brad Paisley – “… but me”. Perfect Paisley pity he sucked live.

13. Day ‘N’ Night – Kid Cudi – Around about here Cudi became the real thing.

14. A Change IS Gonna Come – Adam Lambert – If Lambert had one performance half as good as this on his first album, he’d be a star today.

15. The Crooked Line – Elvis Costello – It wasn’t that all of Secret, Profane, sucked. This fiddley folk song is great. It is that MOST OF IT SUCKED.

16. Folding Chair – Regina Spektor – I had a huge fight with Marie Lynn over this song. She thought the production completely fucked it up, I said you can’t keep a good song down.

17. D.O.A – Jay-Z – Just about now you can hear me giving up on Jay-Z.

18. Johnny Cash Is Dead And His House Burnt Down – Larry Gaitlin – They don’t write em like this no more.

19. I’m In Miami Bitch – LMFAO – I keep on saying how David Guetta blew BEP off stage at MSG. And he did. But so did LMFAO.

20. The Last Days Of Summer – Steve Soto – There is something so son of Crenshaw about him.

21. I Know You want me (Calle Ocho English Extended Remix) – 1,2,3,4 Uno duo, tres…

22.Poker-Face – Lady Gaga – She’ll think it’s tragic when that moment first arrives, oh but it’s magic, it’s the best years of her life.

23. See How We Are – X – I was prepping for the Bowery Ballroom gig and my middle name was still trouble.

24. The E Street Shuffle – Bruce Springsteen – It’s like a first date where every little thing clicks into place.

25. We’ll Meet Again – Vera Lynn – Why was I listening to Vera Lynn???? Maybe a greatest hits had just been released.

26. Heart And Soul – The Cleftones – First song I ever learnt to play on piano… also the last song I ever learnt to play on piano.

27. My Resistance Is Low – Hoagy Carmichael – First song Costello sang at Beacon 2009… and just about the only decent song he played that set.

28. Oh My God – Ida Maria – daytrotter session and really wild and cool.

29. Armagodamotherfuckinggeddin’ – Marilyn Manson – Pretty good. I mean, no reason for it not to hit except he is out of time.

30. Just A Friend – Biz Markie – “Don’t even give me that…” I love that Heineken drink carefully ad in a cab… it’s not on anymore.

31. Boyfriend # 2- Pleasure P – Isn’t this guy meant to be the next Usher?

32. Now Now – Little Boots – You need a fucking blueprint and a map to figure out all these English girls with their drum machines and tough ass putdowns.

33. Falling And Laughing – Orange Juice – Why the hell was I listening to Orange Juice?

34. Civilian Ways – Rancid – About the lead singers’ brother back home from the war in Iraq. It’s a moving and lovely country-folk song and wel, well, worth getting ig you don’t know it.

35. I Gotta Feelin
g – Black Eyed Peas – I’ve got six remixes and I’d put the original around the middle.

36. Easy – Deer Tick – Be wary of bands names that are verbs or have deers in em. I’m just saying.

37. Inside Outside – The Grates – The blonde chick is a little knockout.

38. I’m Always Chasing Rainbows- Judy garland – First over the rainbow, then under the rainbow and finally she can’t reach em at all.

39. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (Single version) (Stereo) – Neil Young – Great song. Why did I buy this version? Because I’m a fucking idiot.

40. All The Beautiful Things – Eels – Purty, acoustic, nice nice nice… but a bit mehy
