“What I did that evening. What she said that evening, Fulfilling my hope, heading for glory, OK.” That’s the catchy French part of the 1977 hit new wave tune by The Talking Heads.
In 1983 I had a chance encounter with Davide Byrne. I was caught off guard by his almost coy demeanor. He appeared as a typical college nerd, not of the caliber of me and my punk rock crew. He was ‘faggy’. Seeming almost timid- but that wasn’t really accurate. After an exchange of pleasantries I said I wasn’t really a fan of his music. I turned at that moment and he said something- I didn’t hear it and I was far too cool to ask for him to repeat it. Oh, if I could only turn back time!
Flash forward 31 years and with slamming headache I pop on the the tunes and up comes? This gem. What the hell was that college nerd thinking with this one? Written with Chris Franz, and Tina Weymouth (who makes me skin crawl) these clean kids were a bit touched in the head, ay? But what a great song! What a fabulous play on words and such a contagious beat!
I missed a whole lot of cool ‘new wave’ when I was busy being NYXHC that’s for sure. The bass (plucked by Miss Weymouth) is brilliant. The choking lyrics are perfection and lyrically- those poshy bastards can wield a pen that’s for sure. Hell, this could be my anthem if shit gets cray.
“We are vain and we are blind I hate people when they’re not polite”
Amen to that brother.
David I sorta take it back, I think I like some of your music.
