MIA Maybe A Plank but Her Newly Posted Song Is Great by Iman Lababedi

MIA posted both the NYT interview (I listened for a minute but it is as boring as the interviews I have to listen to for rock nyc) and there is also a self serving new song just posted.
And… it is fucking great, better than “Born Free” and “xxoo”.. “I’m A Singer” states her case  and well without agreat thumping and subdued bass, echoey and guilt and disturbing. And when you’re singing about turning tricks in America who knows where the finger ends up pointing. Also, and sure unintentional, but “I’m A Singer” sounds an awful like… well take the g out of singer and it’s over!
One other thing: the Elliott Smith story got me thinking about MIA, in that her terrifying childhood seems to infect every single fucking thing she did. During the reading yesterday, Lisa quoted (And I didn’t write) Smith saying how he could never get over the abuse of his childhood. Until you’ve gone hungry the effects of hunger can’t even be imagined. From Dickens to Smith and beyond people find it very difficult to recover. MIA’s problems. her distrust, her overeaction, her “hey that’s mine your stealing” to Lady Gaga and others as if she owes nothing to Madonna who owes so much to Giorgor Moroder -as though  MIA came out of a vacuum, that “It’s mine” is a direct reflection of her childhood and her reaction to the NYTs suggests to me she should start coming to terms with it.
