So how sexy are Deap Valley?

Here is drummer Julie Edwards speaking to Bang Showbiz: “”We never expected the problems that having a sexy image has caused. We dress the way we want to dress. We’re kind of bold and we’re putting it all out there. People love it, but then there are lots of people who don’t. ‘There are feminists who accuse us of not being feminists and of setting back the feminist cause which to me is insane. There are people who have reviewed our live show and all they can talk about is what we’re wearing. They couldn’t even focus on the music because it was so distracting to them that we had cleavage and butts. That really came as a surprise to us.’ ‘It’s some weird double standard with alternative rock. Either you have to hide your sexuality away to be taken seriously or you are a model who has been hired by a band to appear in their music video in your underwear. Neither of those options really suit Lindsey [Troy, vocals and guitar] or myself.”

So I ask again, how sexy are Deap Valley? Well, compared to Jeff The Brotherhood or the Black Keys (or the Indigo Girls for that matter) very sexy. But compared to Rihanna or Icona Pop, garden variety.

Deap Valley are a pretty good Blues garage rock duo.  California gals, they met in needlecross class (it says here) back in 2011 and have forged a career based upon cleavage and cutoffs, but not just cleavage and cutoffs.  The singer Julie knows how it is done and she does in alright. I mean, no Marissa Patermosta, but she gets the job done. Think early White Stripes meets, I dunno, that Canadian duo who had a hit last year and the drummer isn’t blonde but she can bang em out. Their debut album Sistrionix (Grade: B-) is an alright stix and stones done me wrong screamer after screamer. Which is fine with me.

Plus, really, with the possible exception of my fine self, can you be too sex?
