How the hell did we get to a point in time when punk rockers who spit and snarly win mainstream awards?  When did society accept the intentional outcast and elevate them to ‘icon’. Aren’t they supposed to be scorned and snubbed? Shouldn’t you be locking your door and not popping a bottle of Dom?

Decades change mentalities and what was gasp worthy in the 70s is now as mainstream as Levi’s.  It happens and its unfortunate- we have no rebels left and pushing the boundaries now is a waste of energy.   The more outlandish the more its adored.  Back to Johnny- award time for the former Sex Pistol and sassy gent.

BMI’s Icon award is granted to songwriters who have left “a unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers” and previous recipients include Queen, Ray Davies, Steve Winwood and Bryan Ferry.

President Del Bryant says: “John is a true icon whose influence on music, fashion and art has been felt around the world. We’re very pleased to recognize his impact on popular culture and his outstanding musical contributions.”

What exactly has Lydon written that warrants this hoopla?  Pistols classics Anarchy In The UK, God Save The Queen and Pretty Vacant, along with PIL tracks Rise, This Is Not A Love Song, Warrior and Public Image.

PIL released a This Is PIL, their first album in 20 years, in 2012. Lydons sense of humour is priceless and in answer to his tour of China  he said: “They have either incredible good taste or they have no idea what I’m going on about. I can’t wait to find out. I hope their prison food is better than elsewhere. I’ve been in jails all around the world; I’m due an update.”
