Nine Inch Nails are back and they came back haunted, at least this is the title of the first single of their upcoming full length ‘Hesitation Marks’, set to be released on September 3rd via Columbia Records. It is their first album since 2008, with an intriguing title about the tentative wounds made by someone who is building up courage before the final and fatal wound,… ouch, very dark!
‘Came Back Haunted’ is a long track filled with deep pounding electronica-synth beats, like an industrial pulsating and macabre dance, soaring at times from its muddiness and fuzziness, thanks to Trent Reznor’s angst-y vocals, singing ‘Everyone now reminding me/I’m not who I used to be’, and the chorus, ‘I don’t believe/I had to see/ I came back haunted’. Reznor sounds scary and creepy enough, like a sort of zombie coming back from the dead to tell about the other side.
The song sure installs the kind of dark atmosphere we can imagine from a Nine Inch Nails’ track, but I am never really been into their music. However, it is reported everywhere this is a return to their early sound, and if you listen to their 2005 hit The Hand that Feeds again, you will definitively hear some similarities,… I just had just never realized they were so dance-y?
