Lou Reed is no longer on life support, wait, you didn’t know he was? Neither did I. Apparently his April show cancellations were more than ‘exhaustion’ but in fact a failing liver. Word comes from his wife Laurie Anderson that he is doing well now after a liver transplant.
A liver transplant? How the hell did they keep this one so hush hush? Reed who is 71-year was admitted to the Mayo Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio after rejecting New York hospitals because he claimed were ‘dysfunctional’. What a spitfire, ay? Reed was given a new liver and Anderson said, ‘it started working immediately’.
She told The Times, ‘It’s as serious as it gets. He was dying. You don’t get it for fun. (It was) a big surgery which went very well.’
It must have been very, very bad considering the waiting list for organs. How did Reed score one so quick? The infamous NY (velvet) underground hero must have some clout in Ohio. The guitarist, lead vocalist and main songwriter for The Velvet Underground. He is most known for the anthem ‘Walk On The Wild Side’ released in 1971. The song (and ‘Transformer’, the album it came from) was produced by David Bowie. All part of that grungy Village scene that becomes more urban legend then fact every year.
Laurie Anderson, well Im sure she’s a nice woman- not a fan of her art music but hey- these two make a great pair. Together for over 20 years, and married for 5- lets’ wish them a long forever.
Nice job on the secrecy kids.
