Ty Segall is in the position in my books nearly exactly where Kurt Vile was a year ago. I like him fine but what’s all the fuss about?
Then I saw Kurt at Summerstage and changed my mind!
But the gotcha moment hasn’t quite arrived for the West Coast indie rocker and me though if I had paid more attention to Melt three years ago it might well have.
Ty is all over the damn place, you can’t throw a brick without hitting one of the bands he plays for, everyone from Fuzz to Perverts and many times, if you can concentrate hard enough on him, he is pretty damn good but far too often he is as slippery as his songs, they don’t stick to your ears and you seem to forget you’re listening to him? Also, that name, man. It is enough to make you want to move on on sight. It is a terrible monicker.
So why see catch him August 30th at Bowery Ballroom?
1. His music lends itself to live performance, it is like psychedelic garage shooting off all over the place.
2. The Kurt Vile syndrome, sometimes you don’t get a band till you catch em live.
3. It’s a Friday and a rock band, who needs an excuse?
4. It’s dirt cheap…
So on the whole, yeah, I’m gonna go. Plus, did I mention how great Melt was?
