Now I have checked out Modern Hut performing their upcoming album, the next absolutely positively must see on my list is Laura Marling. From the two songs I’ve heard, Laura’s May 28th release for her fourth album Once I Saw An Eagle, has all the earmarks of a modern Blue. A travelling album on the road to romance and disappointment, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to discover it at the top of my album list for 2013
I’ve only her in person once, at the McKittrick Hotel in 2011 performing a way too short set at half an hour. It was breathtaking and while I admit the intimate surroundings, with Christmas trees surrounding her and a fragile English Rose vision in a polo neck sweatshirt, Laura was blonde. But not California blonde. A translucent , timeless blondeness. Like she had been raised around sheep in the English countryside and was auditioning for the role of Emily Bronte’s ghost.
Plus she can sing and write songs while dating half the folkies in the UK, including Marcus Mumford who used to be her drummer.
So Laura is playing Roulette in Brooklyn on May 28th and tix go on sale today (Friday, May 3rd) for $30.00. May 28th is the night Jack Phillips plays at Don’t Tell Mama and Dave Davies at City winery. And while I have no problem blowing off Dave to see Jack, I think Jack is out of luck when it comes to Laura. As it happens, I have started helping produce some shows and might want to use Jack in June if he wants to do it so I should get the chance to see him anyway, if he chooses to do it of course.
As far as my state and church rants at Pitchfork for their festivals, if I make $100 (and will probably lose money) on the shows it will be a miracle. Rock nyc hasn’t made me or my partners (or my editors and writers) a penny in four years, I need to grow the readership (is there anything more old fashioned than an opinion based music website??) and this is one way I will try and do it. It is not equitable with PF’s multi- million dollar Music festivals in paris.
The simple truth is, I can’t possibly miss Laura in such an intimate surrounding. It is an absolute, total must see. Here is the info:
