Hey I dig The Monkees, I really do. I have since I was a kid. Davy Jones was a massive swoon inducer. Everyone dreamt of a reunion and Mike Nesmith was the hold out. Portraying himself as a stand off arrogant 'artiste''', sure think Tex. But then something terrible happened. The cute one, Davy, died. Suddenly and without warning after a successful stop in New York for his final 'tight pants' tour. So sad.
Well then, Mike suddenly wants in. Touring starts for Nesmith, Dolenz, Tork solo. All well and good- til they reunite. All we need now is a Davy hologram to make it more awful. This is a great example of missed opportunity. A four man Monkees tour would have me screaming like the 'Beatles just landed, a three man Monkee tour is a meh of an event.
I will say that one of the stops, The Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY is one of THE best places I have ever been. In a beat up town is an old theater with a staff that would invite you to Sunday dinner and a sound system worth more than the real estate value of the entire city block. I saw Morrissey there and its ambience made it even more spectacular. Great sight lines too.
The three launched a reunion tour in 2012 where they paid tribute to Davy Jones, cha ching. The group plan to change focus for this new tour.
"This time we probably won't lean so heavily on the David situation," Dolenz told Rolling Stone. "I think we have to move on. Everybody has to move on. He'll always be remembered and acknowledged, but possibly not as much as on that particular tour. We will, of course, still perform 'Daydream Believer' and all the other hits."
