Suddenly last summer I caught the dreaded Coldplay at the Meadowlands where the bus I was on got lost on the way there .Yeah, I have no idea how a bus whose sole function in life is to go from Point a to Point B and back gets lost but there you go. Anyway, I arrived late and Emili Sande was leaving the stage as I got there so I missed my first past chance to see the woman on stage. In my books Sande is an Adele knock off without the bang but with a decent amount of boom.
In other words, I don't think much of Our Version of Events but if you do, so be it. We won't argue. You may well have your reasons and "Next To You" is a fine song.
All well and good as far as it goes, right? But here comes news that the album has been in the UK Top 10 for a staggaring 63 weeks now, beating out the 62 week record of Please Please Me and that is insane. I mean the album is harmless enough but I haven't heard a single word about Sandimania.
There is something resolutely middlebrow about Emili, just ignoring questions of music or taste (or racism for that matter), Please Please me was a game changing mix of r&b and pop with an accent and a taste of skiffle and rock em sock em rock and roll, and OVOE is a very tasteful soul album.
Emili said: "I’m completely lost for words and this is something I could only have dreamed of. The Beatles are the greatest band of all time and their legacy lives on and continues to inspire all of us that make music. I’m so happy that so many people have connected with the stories and the songs on the record, this really is our version of events now.”
Kinda baffling right? I have no idea why this Ok (I gave it a C+ at the begining and have upgraded it to a B) album is so popular.
