Brandon & Leah's Record Release Party In West Hollywood, Monday April 8th 2013

I am honestly still surprised I got invited to this party, it looked so private, so hip, so rich, so full of fashionable people, and I am nothing like this! Nevertheless, I got to the top of a big building in West Hollywood on Monday night, to attend a private record release party for Brandon & Leah's new EP. The rooftop looked very beautiful and the nightly view absolutely breathtaking, and about 50 people were already there, eating hors d’oeuvres and drinking cocktails, whereas a small stage was ready to welcome the Californian duo. The evening was very much about social gathering, and I am sure I was surrounded by celebrities I didn’t recognize.

But one I certainly recognized was Kim Kardashian! She showed up a few minutes after I got there, and was of course the center of attraction for a little while… What? Kim Kardashian and me on a Hollywood rooftop? How the hell did this happen? My first reaction was, where is Kayne? But, sorry, he never came, just Kim and her very pregnant belly, chatting and hugging Leah Felder. Brandon & Leah’s song ‘Showstopper’ was picked as the theme song for the K sisters' reality show, ‘Kourtney & Kim Take Miami’, and this of course explains a lot of things.

Now, excuse my complete ignorance about the show and the family pedigree tree, but it looked like I was in total Kardashian territory: Brandon is actually Bruce Jenner’s son, who is now married to Kris Jenner, Kim’s mother! Bruce had also been married to Grammy nominated lyricist Linda Thompson (and Elvis Presley’s ex, no less), and Linda is now married to

music industry icon David Foster, the duo’s first connection with music. Bruce and Linda were there the whole time, watching their son’s performance. Furthermore, Brandon’s wife, Leah, is the daughter of former Eagles guitarist Don Felder (the duo’s second connection with music), who was also watching her daughter’s performance. See, it's complicated, and I don’t know if you are still following me, but right now I have more and more the impression I had in fact crashed a family reunion. How could these kids not do well when they are surrounded by so many accomplished people?

Kim K. actually left the place before the duo got on stage – at this point, my hope to see her coming back with Kayne on her arm had almost vanished – and Brandon & Leah played three songs off their ‘Cronies’ EP, the real purpose of the evening. Three songs is not a lot, I was just getting in the mood when they were already thanking people and saying goodbye! Nevertheless the duo’s performance was a sight to watch, with Leah’s sultry voice and stunning physique being the center of attraction, undulating over the jazzy arrangements and exotic drumming as there were actually two drums on stage. Their music captured a certain Malibu beach carefree attitude, almost Caribbean with these happy beats, and everyone on stage seemed to have fun. ‘Showstopper’ was obviously the catchiest off the three, with its series of hum-hum-hum onomatopoeias, as if Leah wanted to invent a new language with her sexy and playful vocals – you can watch the creative official video all display-of-lyrics-on-body below.

Three songs and it was over, but wasn’t everyone expecting for more? I don’t know, may be this is how it works in the jet-society. Anyway I left and accidentally took the elevator with Bruce Jenner and an elegant woman from New York who was talking about booking them for her party at the Guggenheim,… Jeez, in what world was I? In any case, I hope Kayne shows up too next time.
