From the folks who wrote "The Hangover" how is this for high concept? "The Hangover Goes To College"? Not bad and starring Skylar Astin, who was so good in "Pitch Perfect" as Casey who along with looking for trouble Miles Trouble, go to on a surprise visit to former High School current college kid Jeff Chang (Justin Chon -who never left an impression in "Twilight") on campus to help him celebrate his 21st birthday.
Chang has a meeting the next morning to get into Pre_Med and one of the nastiest father's in screen history who would not be amused if he showed up, well, hungover. But to placate his friends he agrees to go out for one drink…. twelve hours later and oceans of booze and some hi-jinx later everybody is a little older and a little wiser, friendships are reformed and Latina Sororities are avenged.
Sound like fun? Meh, it is painless enough. None of the three leads are all that great as they learn to stand up, slow down, grow up all in that order. The problem is that nothing that happens is all that thrilling. Say what you will about "The Hangover", Jon Lucas and Scott Moore who wrote and directed "21 And Over", wrote that, what happened was pretty awesome and the construction: told in flashback and how did this happen? made it a fascinating picture puzzle. "21 And Over" uses the same construction but there isn't that much too put together and the puzzle portion is a dud.
So not much here but not the worst way to kill a coupla hours.
The song's aint bad, Langhorne Slim's "The Way We Are" is worthy of a young Ryan Adams and Dropkick Murphy's are what you want playing on your lost weekend but. what the hell is Knicks Guard Iman Shumpert doing here? Rapping of course…
