This sounds so 2004, Rilo Kiley has a new song called ‘Let Me Back in’ and you can stream it via Spin. The LA indie band has separated a long time ago but announced a few months back the release of ‘RKives’, which is not a new album but a collection of previously unreleased B-sides, demos and rarities.
We can already listen to the first song which, although it was recorded during the ‘Under the Blacklight’ sessions (my least favorite Rilo Kiley album by far) sounds like vintage Rilo Kiley: an acoustic guitar, Jenny Lewis’ passionate and emotional croon, an old-fashioned melody and subtle and soothing arrangements that never cover her clear and melancholic vocals. It’s certainly a pretty song growing with strings and gentle hand-clapping. But more than everything, the song is a love declaration to Lewis’ beloved city, ‘And when the palm trees bow their heads/No matter how cruel I’ve been/LA, you always let me back in’.
If you are a Rilo Kiley’s fan, you can even help the band to make the video for the song, as they explained it on their website:
‘Help us make our video! For our first single, “Let Me Back In”, we invite you to upload your favorite personal Rilo Kiley video clip, band footage, created animation, etc… whatever you have in moving pictures that you’d like to share with us. We will then view and choose among them to incorporate into the video. All submissions are due by March 5th. – Rilo Kiley’
The 16-song album ‘RKives’ will be out on April 2nd via LA based indie Little Record Company, and it will be complimented by artwork designed by the band, including personal photos, collages, and hand-written lyrics. A real treat for the fans!
