Have you ever really wanted to like something, but just couldn't do it? It's like when someone you really trust and has the same taste in food as you gives you a snack. You want to like it, because you've liked every other one before, but this one just isn't so great?
That's how I feel about Taking Back Sunday's new song "El Paso".
With Taking Back Sunday being on my list of 'top 10 favourite bands in the entire universe forever and always', I was stoked to give this song a listen. The instruments are good and really show TBS' progression from the last album. Up until the chorus, it's genius and clever and absolutely fantastic. I liked it, it was catchy and gave me flashbacks to Tell All Your Friendsand Louder Now, two of my favourite albums of all time. As soon as it hits the chorus, I'm bored and want to turn it off. Adam Lazzara's voice has always stood out to me and been one of the best and most enjoyable for me, but the chorus is just such a turn off. He used to semi-scream on the previous albums, and it was tolerable, but this just is painful and sounds too forced.
If you took the chorus out of the song, it'd be so great. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way.
Still, I'm super excited for the whole album. Crazy optimist I am.
