Haaaa, the music of the 60s, the golden age, the sweet careless decade, … but if there is a part of it that will never die, there is another part that is almost dead.
When he recorded ‘Sealed with a Kiss’ in 1862, Brian Hyland was pushing the syrup-dipped-candy pop with puppy-love lyrics and became right away a teenager idol.
The Udell and Geld’s song was written in 1960 and previously recorded by the Four Voices, but it’s only with Hyland that it became a hit, and remained on the chart for 15 weeks. It was later covered tons of times, aa there are even versions in German, French, Portuguese, Cantonese and Kmer language!
With its background female vocals (Trudy Parker) which add to the sweetness, this marshmallow-pop, slightly country-influenced (well, there is an harmonica), is a summer song about teenagers in love separated for the summer, and sharing wet kisses already thinking about September.
This kind of 60s pop may be almost dead and a thing of the past, but in ‘Sealed with a Kiss’ you can nevertheless hear here and there what it is about to give to its musician successors.
