2011: A Disappointment

In many ways 2011 was a repeat of 2010 only less so.

As seen by the best of lists, this was not the year of musical innovation it was a holding pattern: from indie to pop, from rock to dance, it was more of the same but without the thrill of the new.

Here are some albums to consider:

Born This Way – Lady Gaga

The People's Key – Bright Eyes

Circuital – My Morning Jacket

Watch The Throne – Kanye West And Jay-Z

Planet Pit – Pitbull

Nine Types Of Light – TV On The Radio

This Is Country Music – Brad Paisley

All major releases, all OK, all appreciably worse than the bands prior work. And it defines 2011 at a glance, everybody is a little older, everybody is a little worse. So that is basically across the board, from the length and the breadth of the music scene, everybody got a litte bit older and a little bit worse. Just look at Kanye West. Who in their right mind can compare My Beautiful Dark Twisted fantasy to Watch The Throne? The only song that really makes it on the latter is "New Day".

I consider 2010 one of the great years in popular music, Not 2011. It is like comparing 1979 to 1980. From a peak to the following year.
