YACHT put on an amazing show at Webster Hall on 4/27!! WOW!
I wasn't sure exactly what I was getting into prior to the show, but it was surely an outer universal experience.
Fronted by Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, ( who is a freaking rockstar btw!),they claim not to be the leaders of the cult they created, Team YACHT. I however, beg to differ.
YACHT was born in 2002 in Portland, Oregon as a solo cross-disciplinary experiment for Bechtolt, using technology to extend physical boundaries of communication, performance, and music. In 2008, after a shared mystical experience in the Far West Texas desert, Bechtolt was joined in the YACHT endeavor by longtime collaborator Claire Evans. Spurred by this paranormal bond, this new incarnation of YACHT wrote and recorded “See Mystery Lights” in Marfa, Texas. In 2010, The Straight Gaze — Robert “Bobby Birdman” Kieswetter and Jeffrey “Jerusalem” Brodsky — rounded out the live presentation of all YACHT music.
Constantly throughout their set the bassist, keyboard/crazy electro instrumentalist, and drummer were switching instruments, something I always think is interesting, that musicians can put egos aside and just play the music that sounds the best based on each band member skill set. The sound they produce is very disco, great for dancing, heavy in synth, has some origins in rock, and somewhat poppy. I think its amazing, its uniqueness and originality are astounding; not surprising that DFA picked them up a while ago.
Lead singer Claire Evans stole the show though. She is a rockstar, straight up. She owned the stage; she owned the mic; she owned everyone in the nearly sold out show, while she was singing, all of which are not easy tasks. "Psychic City ( Voodoo City)" was an awesome song. I hadn't heard it but once on the internet an hour before the show, and mysteriously she had me singing alone with her word for word less then half way through the song. She jumped into the crowd and majestically navigated her body through the packed house all without a wireless mic. She also continuously wrapped this same mic cord around her body during the show, pretty sexy. Oh yeah and the best part.. she has an amazing voice too. Like a maze ing. So let me reiterate, she is a freaking rockstar.

They are currently on a HUGE N.A. tour, they have already rocked Coachella Music Festival in Indio, went through Texas and are now up the coast, hitting Boston next, playing with a select few bands. Light Asylum were our openers last night, helping with a "Spiritual Warmup." And that's just Step 1… I'm ecstatic for steps 2-4.. not so much Step 5 in all honestly.
