After dismissing the Weepies new single “Please Speak Well Of Me” as an inconsequential snooze last month, it showed up on my Ipod and set me back on my heels.
The problem is that in a world of big bang boom, the Weepies are lo-fi, a whisper, a downbeat, it is all restraint emotional devastation.
But it is emotional devastation. Much like lead singer Deb Talan’s title request, the sentiments (she has dumped a guy and regrets it: “Did I ever know, could I have been blinder?”) are crouched in understatement and the finger clicks and hand claps are all downbeats, the songs depression bearly peering out.
Good, but the tune, a circling back melody over and over again, is catchy though the songs quietness makes it a little difficult to capture. The Weepies could really use Mandy Moore again. They needed somebody to sell em.
