Will Smith has turned down the role of Marvin Gaye in Cameron Crowe’s still in pre-production bio-pic. Cameron and Will have been trying to negotiate this for weeks and while I have nothing much against Crowe (loved his Fast Times At Ridgemond High book) I don’t think he is even vaguely right for this story.
Who would be? Maybe Spike Lee if he can chill it a bit, certainly a great American filmaker such as Spielberg could do Gaye credit.
And I don’t think Will Smith is right as Gaye. I thought Smith was horrible as Ali and see no reason to believe the sincerely fakey Smith could play Gaye.
