What The Spotify Staff's Best Of 2011 Tracks Teaches Us

A listening to Spotify Staff's best of 2011 reveals that they are male, middle class recent college grads. There taste runs to marijuana, maybe even heroin, but definitely nothing speedy. And that they are addicted to melodic alt-rock with the accent on folk not rock.

Spotify's # 1 track is by London quintet Wild Palms, talented boys from London who play mood enhancing alt-folk. Their # 2 song is better, by an excellent indie band I haven't heard of before, Givers.

Of their top 10, I've heard of three acts, Wild Beasts and Kurt Vile, and like don't love em.

So I am not quite claiming they have crappy taste in music, but what I am claiming is they seem one dimensional. No pop, no dance, no tech… nothing. Just alt folk. It begs an answer to the question how does a staff run a music streaming site with such a limited palate.

Any one?
