Warped Interview: The Devil Wears Prada

Devil Wears Prada is a metalcore band from Dayton, Ohio.  They spread the message of God and pack a hardcore punch, making them stand out in their scene.  Their immense fanbase, starting as early back as 2005, has brought them to do many, many tours, including this year's Warped.

I was standing in the backstage hallway with Mike Hranica and Chris Rubey, the vocalist and lead guitarist of the band.

Mary Magpie: "What's the best thing about being on Warped Tour?"
Chris: "One of the best things is consistently playing to the same size crowd every night and not having to worry about if we're going to get a lot of people to come out in one city or not."

MM: "What's the funniest thing that's happened to you all tour?"
Chris: "Nothing funny ever happens…"

MM: "Haven't left anyone behind?"
Chris: "I wish… Not yet. No shenanigans have gone down, they need to happen."

MM: "If you could collaborate with any band on Warped Tour, who would it be?"
Chris: "That (A Day To Remember) seems to be the easiest."
Mike: "Yeah, he produced the A Day To Remember record, and then Jeremy worked with us a little on our new record."

MM: "Well did you discover any new bands you like at Warped?"
Chris: "I hadn't really listened to the band Bad Rabbits at all, and there's a rapper named Grieves also.  Really good, who I never heard before this tour."

MM: What's your favourite thing about being in The Devil Wears Prada?"
Chris: "Aw man… I'd say the riches and the fame…the glory."

Mike on spreading their Christian message at Warped: "We think of things very plainly as far as the ministry.  We never do church tours or anything like that, we do stuff like this, like the Killswitch (Engage) tour and whatnot, it's really about bringing people to tours rather than going to those that already know the message because they know it.  We want to entertain whoever we can and we're kind of meeting in the middle.  I think we really fluxuate as far as the live performance and the tours we do and any other tours we're doing meet the demands for this band who we're supporting, this band.  We morph ourselves.  This tour is great because it really tries to cover all the bases so it can really fit in a lot of bands."

MM: "What's the craziest thing you've ever seen on any tour?"
Mike: "Adam getting peed on that one time."
Chris: "Yeah, the old A Day To Remember drummer got peed on…"
Mike: "Yeah, that's up there."
Chris: "Way back when we were still doing the whole local thing, we played in Cincinnati and had a friend who had driven out to a show and she had dropped her keys down a grate and it was in a sewer and then our friend Trey stepped up and he was like 'Alright, the only way this person can get home is if we can get these keys.'  He took the grate off, took all his clothes off, and jumped down into it.  It was up to his waist, he pulled it up with his toes, and there was broken glass and everything.  It was crazy."

MM: Can you describe yourself in three words?"
Chris: "Masculine… wait is this serious or…?  Totally awesome dude would be one, and then carnivorous…carnivorous,… carnivorous meat eater.  I don't know, it's hard."
Mike: "Always really mean.  I'm just trying to set the bar really low so everyone thinks I'm a jerk.  So when people meet me they can be like 'Ooh, he wasn't a jerk!'  So I say always really mean."

MM: "What's an embarrassing or unexpected song on your iPod?"
Chris: "Kevin (Skaff, of A Day To Remember) loves Shakira.  He has all of Shakira."
Mike: "Sometimes I'll really like a hit.  Rarely.  So I have like the Godsmack single, a Katy Perry single.
Chris: "I have Nelly Furtado.  'Pretty Boy Swag' by Soulja Boy."

The Devil Wears Prada are masculine, have swag, and spread their message everywhere.
