This was the first time ever that I was genuinely excited for the VMAs. Fall Out Boy and Twenty One Pilots got nominated for awards, One Direction are cute as ever, and seeing as everyone else on earth was watching them, I decided to get in on the action.
The first disappointment of the evening was the fact that 30 Seconds To Mars won for Best Rock Video. First off, Jared Leto, cut your damn hair. I only liked you in Fight Club, when you got beaten up. Also, since when was this band even relevant anymore? They peaked like, five years ago. Also, aren’t they the jerks who charged ridiculous money for meet and greets? Yeah. Ew. Someone hand that Moon Man over to Fall Out Boy.
Artist to watch was Austin Mahone- excuse me, Austin who? Twenty One Pilots should have won, not only because I got everyone I knew to vote for them, but also cos they are one of my favourite groups ever. I would’ve also been okay with The Weeknd winning, but that didn’t happen either. Super bummed.
Also, can we all just like, shut up about how “Same Love” is apparently the “song that freed the gays”. Woah wait what?! Shut up it’s a song about a social “issue” and that’s the only reason it’s popular, and will have no relevance soon enough. It was annoying and I don’t want you preaching to me, you’re here for entertainment.
Kanye is a genius. He’s demented and disturbing, in such an intelligent and fascinating way. The imagery of the tree insinuating lynching was chilling, and I was stunned and captivated, ridiculously impressed with an even stronger respect for the man than I ever had before.
I don’t have enough words to explain how much I utterly despise Bruno Mars.
However, it was nice to see Jimmy Fallon and Joseph Gordon Levitt presenting awards, because wow are those two looking good. And speaking of looking good…Justin Timberlake? What a god. What he did was absolutely phenomenal, making a timeline of all he’s done in his career, working his way up to…NSYNC. I was absolutely blown away. After that, I mean hell, it wasn’t the VMAs, it was then the Justin Timberlake show, and it was awesome.
Overall, it was fun and cute, with twists and turns that ended up entertaining millions of people. I had a good time watching it, and even though I’m not exactly one to buy into the whole awards-show thing, it ended up being a fantastic way to spend my last night of summer.
I grade it the same as Iman- A-
