I had the chance to see Two Humans live, at long last. They were playing a house show in New Haven and I had seen the members before in their other musical endeavors, (i.e. Sorority Noise), but hadn’t seen TH in action. I was ridiculously stoked, having been listening to them for a while, and knowing that Jason Rule, charismatic and tallest-man-on-earth frontman, has fantastic stage presence and copious amounts of swagger, I knew it was gonna be good.
Kevin O’Donnell, bass extraordinaire, also never fails to impress me. As a fellow bassist, I admire his skills and always enjoy seeing him perform. Lucas, who is a phenomenal drummer, powered through and blew me away too- it’s definitely a drummer that makes or breaks a punkier kinda band, and he absolutely makes it. His versatility and creativity adds so much more to the group, and makes the rhythm intricate and unique in every song. As a whole, the trio packed a punch and had the same raw feeling that all their recordings have.
It was adorable because in the middle of their set, the people from the cause we were there to support (Hands Off Appalachia- to help stop mountaintop removal coal mining) came and proposed something interesting. Take a bit of an Oreo cream pie and smear it on the face of someone from the organization for a donation. It was hilarious and silly, and really solidified the casual feeling of the show in general. No one was too cool to get pie in their face, and it was really fun. After all that, the band started up again, picking up with the same energy they left off with.
“Kitchen Island”, one of their best tunes, was stunning live. Something about Jason’s voice was so captivating and pure, and the vocal control that he has is great. Also, that man can shred on the guitar; he’s such a well-rounded musician, which could be said for all of them, making these boys at the forefront of the CT scene, to me. The pushing and dancing around during their set was incredibly fun; even when I’m alone listening to these guys I feel like dancing, and it was cool to see everyone else just let loose.
I’m damn proud to say that these guys are locals, and make Connecticut just a little bit cooler.
