Titus Andronicus At Mercury Lounge, Willie Mae Benefit, Thursday February 10th, 2011: Oh Bondage, Up Theirs

Hi rock nyc reader(s)-it’s me… as you may be aware we are going through a major redesign and we will be back for sure tomorrow… till then, I am trying to figure every thing out so if what you see is stupider than ever please bear with us… first band I wrote about here is Titus Andronicus so it is more than apt, it is intended that I start the remodel with them.

“JULIAN JULIAN JULIAN”

Julian who you ask? I dunno but he is the replacement for Ian Graetzer and was more than credible despite a scary moustache!!!

Patrick himself thought it was the best “first date” they’d ever performed and after surviving the bands iffy first time with a new keybs and a new violinist (now guitarist!) opening for Vampire Weekend awhile back, I tend to agree.

Which doesn’t mean it was precisely good. It takes half an hour for a request for “To Old Friends Old And New”, tossed on stage, to excite Patrick enough for him to pull the band together. It is a great version and though he begins by worrying us that it is a slowie, he ends by crushing it with a soaring vocal, so heart felt you’d think he had never sung it before! ” Patrick notices it. “We should have left the song till later” he nods.

It steadies the band anyway, and they keep it together until the end and then they soar to the end. A great “Battle of Hampton Road” is followed by ” Perfect Union” by “Titus Andronicus Forever” by, hold your breath, “Oh Bondage, Up Yours”!!! sung by guitarist Amy Klein, who has been a teacher at the Willie Mae Rock Camp.

Which is why we are here, of course. A camp for girls between the ages 8 and 18, must be a great thong and since this is where Care Bears On Fire got their start you can bet this one is. TA do lotsa benefits, they are good guys, and this is especially worthy.

But it’s not over.

A week after I had begged Sham 69 not to reunite and a day or so after Helen had called me out over it,  they cover “If the Kids Are United”!!

Great fun, good not great set.

If the girls are united….
