These Days: Wednesday, July 1st , 2015

Recorded: Some weeks are bigger than others and some are just ridiculous in their greatness. This is one of the biggest weeks for pop records in recent history: Miguel, Vince Staples, Neil Young, The Internet, Bilal and Joy Williams all had potential albums of the week. And I can’t listen to them fast enough.

Live: this is the flipside, I missed Brian Wilson and Shania Twain yesterday and don’t have a thing till next Tuesday… It should be a very quiet July 4!!

Politics: One way or the other, New York City gains nothing by Mayor Bill “one term” de Blasio calling Governor Cuomo vindictive. For one thing, well d’uh , doesn’t he think we’ve figured that out by ourselves and for another thing, Cuomo has the damn money and for a third, it is bush-league, like he can’t negotiate with Cuomo. Do I like Cuomo? Not in the slightest. But if I was Bill, I would not have done that.

Death: I was very sorry to hear of the great English social critic Julie Burchill’s son Jack Landesman committing suicide four days ago. My deepest condolences to Julie and her family at this terrible loss. This was Julie’s statement:

My beloved son Jack Landesman killed himself earlier this week. He is at peace now and in pain no longer and of course I don’t believe that life ends with death, so I am lucky. Look after the people you love, as I tried to and failed. Thank you for all your good wishes and offers of support, but I have my Dan, who was a wonderful stepfather to my poor boy for more than half of his life. The love of my friends is a wonderful source of fun in my life, but excuse me if I don’t need it right now. Always, Julie”
