New York: Yesterday was a drizzly write off and today looks worse but that didn’t stop 1000s of would be merpeople from going off to Coney Island Island for the 33rd annual Mermaid Parade. New York, where every day is an excuse for a party!
Sports: The Yanks have lost every single Old Timers Day I’ve ever been to, so needless to say yesterday was a Yankee romp 13 – 3, as the streaky ones remain a game out of first place. A-Rod, nearly as old as the Old Timers himself, followed up his 3,000 hit with another home run.
Brush With Greatness – Nelson George is a great writer but never meet your heroes, he spoke with his friend all the way through the Ibeyi at Summerstage set then said it was great, and snapped at me when I pushed further. Speaking of never meeting your heroes, I always liked Eric Ambel who wrote this titbit about me in the Fricke-Robbins-Me wars, that raged through two days of Facebook. “writer versus blogger, writer always win”. When I pulled him on it, the pussy blocked me.
Live: It wasn’t a great three day run, OK three day run, indeed it has all been a little disheartening. With the exception of Tony Bennett, Roy Hargrove guesting during the Ibeyi set was the best thing about it.
Recorded: Went back to Ibeyi and Jungle after the show. I can’t say I am as big a fan as Nelson George.
Movies: I adored “Inside Out” and might do something I never do -go back for a second viewing.
Father’s Day: My dad died 44 years ago and with no children of my own (illustrating the collective intelligence of womankind better than words ever shall), I couldn’t care less about Father’s Day
