The difference between the Simpsons and the Family Guy, is the difference between parody and satire. If the family Guy had decided to do a Graduate satire, they'd have had Peter as Benjamin and a penguin as Mrs. Robinson.
The Simpsons has been going downhill for a decade and right now just lacks any consistency as they try to spin the same stories over and over again. And it still has it moment.
One occured Sunday on the "Beware Bart's Cheating Heart" episode. A nothing much show with Bart taking Jimbo's girlfriend around because Bart is not a threat. The girl likes the attention and flashes bart her boobs. All a little creepy since Bart is only ten years old. Soon they are making out.
The height of the relationship occurs as an extended parody of "The Graduate" and what appears to be a shot by shot take of the begining of Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft's sexual relationship. Meanwhile, "April Say You Will" is playing in the background.
The entire sequence is head and shoulder's about a lame "Lost" parody -the Homer storyline occurring concurrently.
The Bart sequence manages, amazingly enough, to have some real eeling to it, it seems to capture Mike Nichols aimless passing of hot summer dy after heated summer night.
And then it's over and the episode falls apart.
