"The Perks Of Being A Wallflower" Reviewed (Sorta)

I went to go see the film The Perks of Being A Wallflower which was a film made of the novel written by Stephen Chbosky.  I read the book earlier in the year and I looked forward to seeing it for quite a while.  The screenplay writer, director, etc was Chbosky, which I think is incredible.  He made the film exactly how he wanted it.

Set in the 90s, the soundtrack is filled with classics, such as "Asleep" by The Smiths and "Heroes" by David Bowie (covered by none other than The Wallflowers).  "Heroes" is pretty much the theme song of the film; the tagline "We are infinite" is only said when the tune is playing.  I never really had a soft spot for "Asleep" until now- seeing it in the context of the movie made me love it.  Typically, I go for other Smiths songs, and never really payed much attention to it, and I regret it.  Also, I now can't get over "Heroes".  I've always thought it was a brilliant song, but now it holds an entirely new meaning for me.

The basic synopsis is that a boy named Charlie is a freshman at Mill Grove High School in Pittsburgh.  It's a story about him growing up, what he goes through, and how he deals with it.  Above all else, it's a tale of becoming stronger.  Charlie overcame his empathic tendencies, suppressed memories, and intense depression and became healthy again because of his family and friends.  Tearing up countless times, the coming-of-age story is timeless and no matter what your age, it's heartbreaking and relatable.  Trying to explain how this book has not only affected me greatly but others I know is nearly impossible.  It's a life-changing novel, that was reiterated and made stronger by a phenomenal visual rendition.

I have a new favourite film.

In that moment, I swear we were infinite.
