The Guru at The Space Hamden CT February 28th 2014

Guru

“You’ve never been to a Guru show? Well get ready to see the fuckin’ Guru!”

The Guru, local boys from Watertown CT, are an incredible supergroup of pure happiness and dancy-silliness.  I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from one of their shows, but whatever the heck happened this evening, was not what I had envisioned.
The quartet graced the stage of The Space, and they immediately jumped into a high-energy tune.  It was adorable because the crowd wasn’t just full of fans, it was friends. They knew the callbacks of the songs, made jokes, danced around with reckless abandon.  It was a massive dance party, and it was so casual and so fun.
My favorite tune of the evening was probably “Barracuda Hands”.  There’s no denying the absolutely mind-blowing talent of these boys.  The bass line of this tune blew me away, and intricacy of the guitars and drums combined with it gives it a very summery beach feel and it was so fun because there are little parts of the song that translated really well live, such as pauses and breaks in the song that are complex and whimsical.  It was really impressive.
“Disco Daughter” was also fantastic.  It blew my mind that the vocalist was also the drummer, a unique combination that worked really well for these guys.  They have such a classic funk sound that they mix in with pretty rough vocals and the occasional punk-vibe.  It’s like if you took MGMT, made them really fun and really dancy, and put more pep in their step, multiplied their talent by a thousand, you’d get The Guru.
The crowd alone was enough of a show to be really entertaining.  The nonstop movement of a blob of humans, limbs flailing and fingers pointing, was representative of a passionate group of fans that were clearly not newbies.  The Guru is constantly playing shows, and I’m pretty sure I was the only one in the room who’d never seen these guys before.  It’s like a little cult following, and it’s pretty cool cos they’re locals.
Be sure to catch these boys if they come around, you won’t regret it.
