The Future Punx Is Here

Around two years ago, Brooklyn was abuzz with word that a new band, Future Punx, were changing out of indie pop, with an ear for beats and electronic didgeridoo – like a space age Jetsons wannabe but really real. Opening for the likes of Parquet Court (with whom they split a 7″ back in the day), they were drawing attention, and last years I’m So Inspired EP and double A Side single, promised much. If we didn’t get the extended jams that are such a part of their lives shows, we did get extended codas, intoning “See you in the future” like 1984 post-everything addictive popness.

They don’t have a website (yeah, apparently the future isn’t what it used to be) but I did get this off their website:

“Start Info Launched on September 9, 2012

So, I guess we’re on their own. A Kraftwerk goes to Williamsburg, with cool visuals and hip attitude, the songs are uniformly different , with synths and organs, electronic atmospherics, vocoders and the usual unusual accoutrements, you could imagine the band movie in a Daft Punk future, or maybe early Human League (and, if they get poppier, latter day Human League). This is what Loren di Blasi had to say in the Bushwick Daily (here) in December 2013: “Dressed to the nines with sophisticated sounds to match, Future Punx opened with the jolt of “999,” an electrifying dance number that first set toes tapping. Thanks to their clever blend of slick guitar jangle and groovy rhythms, it’s easy to get lost while riding the band’s futuristic vibes (of course, the fog machine definitely helps). All at once sprightly and sleek, theirs is an appealing mix of retro and modern that fans of bands like Talking Heads and Devo– so basically, everyone– will undoubtedly dig. Plus, hello! Getta load of that keytar!’

Hmmm, a band that references Ray Davies may have a little more up their sleeve than Future Shock, and the lead singers robot in love vocal has a hint of qu’est que ce about it…. It’s a nice vibe and should take em far, and they are opening at Baby’s All Right on Saturday May 15th… here is a taster, Future Punx setat Death By Audio in November 2014.
