The Double Dip!

gigs, man

Back in the late 1970s I was a bartender at “The Other Place” on 39th and 3rd -don’t look for it, it has been gone for decades, and I invented something called the double dip on my days off. Being in the business, I would date waitresses and bartenders for the main part, so I would make a date for the afternoon, drop them off when their shift began and date a civilian during the evening.

The double dip.

And lately I’ve been doing the same thing with concerts!

Last year I went to see Miucky Dolenz, dashed ten blocks at the two thirds mark, and caught New Order. Late the previous year I saw an early set for Laura Marling and a late set for Jane Birkin..

But it is becoming an epidemic!

Last week I went to Femi Kuti in the afternoon and Marla Mase in the evening. This week I am going to Buddy Guy in the evening and dashing like hell to catch the Del Lords on Thursday and on Saturday will skip half of Bruno Mars to see the Bowerytones at Arlene’s Grocery.

Crazy? A little but how do you miss Marla, Scott or Jahn? It isn’t possible. A way to see them both has to be found. There is need to see and hear everything. Do you feel it? It overwhelms me and wears me out, I have to know everything about the mucis scene so I can write about it with complete knowledge, without guessing.

It is of course quite impossible.

But you can’t blame a guy for trying the way a certain waitress once did.
