I’ve been thinking about singers because I just wasted an hour trying to explain why Patsy Cline was one of the three greatest female pop vocalists of all time before giving up on it and I have had problems with Sam Sparro’s voice. And I have also been thing about the Aussie/ Portugese Sam Sparro because he is Love Grenades mentors and I’ve been thinking about Love Grenades.
I, like everybody else, bought the 2008 “Black And Gold” by Sam. But I, unlike everybofy else, didn’t like it: it was too weird for me: a pretty good bass and a steady rhythmy dance groove are both fine but soulful vocal. I couldn’t take. It wasn’t good enough to sell the conceit. I didn’t pursue.
And I didn’t notice that a song i liked a whole off the new Basement Jaxx album, “Feelings Gone” has Sparro singing. SO I checked out some more songs off his self-named 2008 debut and you know, everything else bgan to click big time, eespecially “S.A.M.S.P.A.R.R.O.W’.” where he electronically tweaks his voice and lets a shuddering bass do the work on a Chic soundalike. Good stuff.
