That Was The Week That Was: March 16th, 2015

Sports: St. John’s first trip to the dance since 2011 and they are one and done. Beaten senseless by the 8th seed San Diego State on the NCAA tournament and why? Because the only big guy they had Chris Obekpa was suspended for marijuana. That was a terribly depressing game, these kids were good players were they wer getting out rebounded, they didn’t have a chance.

Recorded: Absolutely, Kendrick Lamar’s week but oddly, it was a tough album, not a populist hit but a hard body punch with so many excursions off the hip hop path, there is no doubting it is the most original sound since Yeezus. Compton is back and the same, for what it is worth.

Theatre: Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II in “The Audience”, what’s not to like, right? Well… less a play than a parlor trick, it was fun but shallow.

Live: Overwhelmed by poverty as a coupla checks didn’t come through I missed Eric Clapton and the August Laura Marling gig. Plus, feeling my age, I blew off Perfume Genius

Weather: Did I mention it was cold? Nearly five inches of snow on Friday, Match coming in and leaving like a lion.

Golden Slumbers: Michael Brown of the Left Banke walked away, A.J. Pero, Twisted Sister drummer, Andy Fraser of Free, Mike Porcaro of Toto… all somewhat on the young side, all died last week.
