I have been fiddling around with the concept behind this column for a year, trying to get it right. By concept I mean something more than just filling space!
Essential I want to make a summation of the prior week in music, maybe a little political, etc. Start here: it was in the 90s all week. Now lessee here:
Recorded Music: Pet Shop Boy’s Electricity was good if not great, a smart disco filler with a couple of tracks that meant more and Ace Hood is at least as good as J. Cole (different of course). But Ronald Isley disappointed and Mayer Hawthorne REALLY disappointed. Not much of a week.
Live music: This is more like it, Jay Z owns the week hands down, everything he touched Friday was excellent. Alice Cooper was both brittle and overwhelming and Screaming Females rote but none the worse for it.
Politics: Obama gave a heartfelt speech about the Trayvon Martin shooting but the right claimed he was making it a question of race and the left pointed to the hypocrisy for a man who had killed innocent children in Afghanistan through drones. Speaking of hypocrites, lots of politicians trying for a second chance.
Media: Jann Wenner tried to close down Ted Cogswell’s “The Peoples Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame” and got spanked for putting a pretty boy terrorist on the cover of the Stone
Movies: Not much, unless you want me to dicuss “R.I.P.D.” again.
Personal: On vacation all week, basically slept and wrote (and went to gigs)
So will this stick as a column? We will see next week!
