David Guetta is this very successful French DJ who has become an international ‘star’ DJ and producer of dance/house music, the kind of stuff that bores me to death. Being the number one DJ of the Parisian nightlife for decades, he decided to make and produce music, a totally unnecessary move if you want my take on this, but it is just me because he is very successful. What can I say, I hate techno-electro-funk-house-remix-mash-up music, I know I’m completely out of the loop for this, but for me it’s not music. This product has a different role than music, it is a pre-made commodity to animate trendy clubs, fashion scenes and hip parties attended by Kate Moss and P Diddy, a parallel universe that never collides with mine. David Guetta is more an entrepreneur than an artist, he owns several establishments (restaurant, club, strip-tease bar) and must think of music as a consumption product.
The track ‘Gettin’ Over You’ (featuring Fergie & LMFAO) from his album ‘One Love’ is so redundant and so predictable I hardly want to finish the song when listening to it. It’s not even a song, well it’s a DJ song, a remix of a loop on his own ‘I Gotta Feeling’ co-written with Will.I Am for Black Eyed Peas. This annoying throb of 3 long minutes, with vocal performances by Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas and the LA electro-hop group LMFAO, is the fast-food of the music, made in a hurry, served to the masses but really indigestible. Well, it is dance music but the mix of electronic beeps, pulsing beat, and Fergie’s blasting voice are just so déjà vu, I don’t understand the attraction there. Guetta said he managed to combine European electro with American urban culture. May be, but the result is trite, without imagination and it has been exhausted to the point of being a recycled caricature.
I know that the point of this kind of music is to be repetitive but how many times can you stand hearing ‘I’m a party, and party and party and party’ before wanting to break something? And if Fergie has a powerful voice, this is another part I don’t like, women with a powerful organ: they just enjoy abusing it so much it becomes plain irritating.
Right now ‘Gettin over you’ is number one in the UK charts, so if it is the hit of the summer in the US clubs, this would completely escape me because I am pretty out of this scene.
