Rush released after leaking early, “Mine”, Taylor Swift’s the first new song since “Today Was A Fairytale” is a straight up masterpiece of the purest pop confection, it rings as true as a bell on A Sunday morning.
“You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter…” is as pure and shiny a couplet as I have heard this year, her vocals are spot on and while she says she is writing from experience this feels like a flash forward and the emotional tug, the lyrical persuasiveness, is all truth in hibernation.
The song ebbs and flows, and the denouement harks back to “Love Story” -she flips from 1st person singular narration to a direct quote from the guy. The effect is a deepening of the feelings.
It is really an amazing song, Swift is simply the best popular songwriter out there. She knows how to construct the song, and she knows how to change the sludge of overdub acoustic guitars into something so honest and complete and meaningful not just for the teen girls who have already made it Itunes top track, but everybody else. It just is the real thing. She is a pop star who reaches deep inside herself and connects with a huge audience.
A great song and it augers very, very, very well for the next album.
