The Only Ones
We may have no integral value but we are the same as everybody else and that must be enough.
Rock is about an unleashing of the Id not a wallowing in the superego. In “Special View” Peter does the impossible, he writes a song from the Superego. And what we gain from this is the most important thing we can, we realize we are not alone.
Van Halen erupted on the scene in ’78 with Eddie’s unmatched guitar pyrotechnics and David Lee Roth’s tongue-in-cheek (and elsewhere) macho posturing. Pretty much a coin flip on whether to select this one or “Dance the Night Away,” but the campy “I been to the edge” monologue makes the difference for me.
Easy to miss, because maybe Perrett was missing it himself (though on a song not on this album he would note “drugs are one thing we have in common”) , love drugs and death make a triumvirate and Peter moves from one to the other .
