When they write the book on greatest Allman Brothers sets Friday night might be nowhere to be found. But it is like going on a magical date with a girl, so perfect, so easy going, so much fun, that you take it for granted.
I am not sure if they are doing anything, , since the songs never circle back they aren’t like jazz and since they have no melodies they aren’t like rock and since they certainly are not 12 bar anything, they aren’t blues. They are all function no form
The Allman Brothers are a reliably great Southern boogie band. Were they better with Duane? Of course they were. Were they better with Dickey Betts? They miss him most from the days when he played with Duane but solo… I am a big big Warren Haynes fan myself and. I dunno. I wish they were both in the band.
The “rust” on the first set meant the band weren’t willing to scale the heights of jam, it was a ridiculously tight, 12 songs in 75 minutes with a fast on its feet rockabilly “Kill Devil Falls” and the full length three days late gravity defying”The Little Drummer Boy” played live for the first time since 2004
Disco Biscuits play like a bi-polar Hamlet: they can’t quite make up their mind where they are going but when they decide they kill it. Who thinks of “Run Like Hell”? Right? I mean if all the Pink Floyd wannabes why this one? But it blasts them through a mental shell and lands them at the instigation to “blow it up”, They cap the set with an excellent “Hot Air Balloon” and the hour plus opening set is brilliant.
i’d rather be dead in a ditch than ever see them live again, they sure do treat their fans well and they are the standard bearers for brand loyalty.
