Between Black Jesus, modern dance interpretation, East African soul music, and one of the most devastating denunciations of power and religion, a performance of “The Power Of Trilogy” wowed Summerstage, Tuesday evening.
There is no doubt about the music here, it took a little while to sink in but it is masterful, powerful and beautiful music which should gain added resonance (But not power: it already has that) through transmogrification

Forget that the music was singularly beautiful, and forget that Woody Guthrie is a great American hero and a friend to the working class, forget that we are given to celebrate such a pioneer of the American spirit, Arlo Guthrie, in refusing to give into the emotion of the evening, made it all so much better.
This feels like the first day of summer, a crystal clear evening with just a trace of cool in the air and one of our great indie rockers Kurt Vile and his band the Violators kicking the lo-fi claim to the floor as the sun begins to set on an hour long set at Summerstage.

Summerstage has always been a blast but if it feels like a bigger, wider blast in the past decade, part of the thanks must go to Artistic Director Erika Elliott. rock nyc had the pleasure of speaking with Ms. Elliott and followed up with written questions.
