“Rolling Stone” lost the plot.
I firmly believe that anybody willing to call the head of the record label he is consulting for a fucking idiot is not corrupted by Spotify.
Lefsetz is biased, he feels biased, he seems to be a shill for Spotify and he certainly gets paid by them, why would he he doing his Rhino Playlist for free? So, he throws his considerable behind a party who is paying him
Then he brings in the best selling first week of all times, NSYNC’s 2.4M from 1996, and closes it by sneering that selling 1M in a nation of 300N is nothing. Incidentally, Lefsetz’s beloved Spotify has only 3M subscribers in the US. And at least Taylor’s numbers are from sales.
In 2010, I reprinted an interview with Dave Davies and here I am going to repost a newsletter by Bob Lefsetz. I am not a huge Lefsetz fan (he is terrible on music) but I forgive him a lot for being so right about so many subjects here. read em and weep
Lefsetz is like the guy who explains the score after the game is over. He lacks the slightest ounce of prescience when it comes to pop music until after the fact, which isn’t prescience at all. He is really clever once there is nothing to be clever about.
