At 1pm, the Silver Lake Chorus was singing their almost a cappella covers on the Fold Stage, the heat was on, and not too many people had already arrived at the fair, but the audience visibly liked them. But why is the Silver Lake Chorus giving condoms with their logo? That’s so Sunset Junction, but good beginning anyway…
They were followed by the wonderfully dynamic kids from Moses Campbell on the same stage at 2pm. She is so pretty, she looks a little bit like Nathalie Portman, and they showed their real punk rocker side.
I caught a little bit of the calypsoul-electro-Brazilian-dance Rhythm Roots All Stars at 3 pm on the Hoover Stage, and a little bit of Maleco Collective around 3:30 pm on the Sanborn stage, kind of Latino-hip-hop-reggae.
Then I ran to the Bates Stage to see Saint Motel at 4 pm.
Unfortunately I had to leave before the end of their set for my interview with Darryl Jenifer from Bad Brains, but I think I saw most of their performance, it was as funny and vibrant as usual. A/J was showing his legs and Asharp had some kind of ad for a ‘hot local gay chat’ attached to his guitar when he came in. Again that’s so Sunset Junction!
Back at the fair after the interview just in time to see the end of the set of Dam Funk on the Bates stage, electro-funk, just groovy! The old guy on my left seems to live it to the extreme.
Meanwhile, running again to the Sanborn Stage, I saw a little of Big Daddy Kane Featuring Connie Price & The Keystones, a rapper backed up by Dan Ubick’s funk-fueled band,… Big Daddy Kane can tell stories
Then back to the Bates stage to see the full set of Miles Davis/Bitches Brew Remix Featuring J Rocc around 7:30 pm. So it is a live re-creation of the famous Miles Davis’ album with Miles Davis’ nephew; and they even made some Miles Davis brew bottles, it’s a dark beer of course.
Rushing to the Sanborn stage, where the all mighty Bad Brains closed the night and unleashed the fury of the crowd,
t was a riot, rapidly out of control, with a serene H.R. telling the crowd to ‘listen, listen to the music’, people forcing the 20 or so huge security guards to hold the barricades, and some crazy fat guys climbing a bus stop to jump in the middle of the crowd.
So much fun!
The fair has to offer a lot of good fatty or sugary food, I did not taste any since I was so busy, so thanks to Kashi cereals, silk milk and Mc Donald milk coffee for the samples that assured my survival at the fair.
And it was just the first day, more to come!
