Speedy Ortiz Sophomoric

Speedy's Second

Speedy’s Second

First of all the PR release: “Speedy Ortiz have announced Foil Deer, the follow-up to last year’s Real Hair EP and 2013’s album Major Arcana. It arrives April 21 via Carpark. “I gave up wasting mental energy on people who didn’t have my back,” frontwoman Sadie Dupuis says in press release. “Listening to our old records, I get the sense that I was putting myself in horrible situations just to write sad songs. The music isn’t coming from a dark place, and without slipping into self-empowerment jargon, it feels stronger.” In addition to the tracklisting and album artwork (that’s it above), Speedy Ortiz have also shared a comic announcing the album’s release, made by artist Michael DeForge.”

I liked Speedy Ortiz but not a lot till I saw em live last summer, where if the songs can seem to be a little lax on record, they come to live as a thrill ride on stage. I am hoping for better things from the second album, maybe success will do more than stop her from crappy relationships with crappy me but, indeed, free Sadie to explore the wondrous nature of rock and roll. Even her best songs drag me on record in ways they don’t on stage (I might add: Sadie isn’t photogenic) and it could be a case of production failing them.
