Sly Stone New Album, August 2011, First Releases In 30 Years

When last seen in public, Sly was weirding out at the Grammys in 2010. No reason why he shouldn't, I mean, after all he is Sly Stone.

Also no reason he shouldn't play a disjointed and disappointing set at BB King's as he did in 2007. A set I still refer back to in a mix of amazement and desperation.

On August 16th, 2011, Sly releases his first new album in 30 years on Industrial/Rock label Cleopatra. So after failing to hook up time after time after time, including a legendary meltdown with Prince, Sly is really back? Well, sort of.  This is a "celebration" with newly recorded tracks and various guests singing along with the Family. Also, there are three new tracks including a reworking of the traditional "His Eye On The Sparrow", and that alone is reason for celebration.  The album is called I'm Back: Family And Friends. Brian Perara, President of Cleopatra Records is quoted thus: "It was an honor and a pleasure to work with a legend.""

The list of guest stars are a touch stale. Vanilla Fudge and Rod Stewart? It might kill but it might not. Bootsy Collins is a down grade from Larry Graham on "Hot Fun In The Summertime" but not by much. I can't wait to hear the Jeff Beck collaboration… I'd prefer that to siccing Kanye West onto it. But I would prefer both.

Here is the tracklist

1.  Dance To The Music feat. Ray Manzarek (The Doors)

2.  Everyday People feat. Ann Wilson (Heart)

3.  Family Affair

4.  Stand! feat. Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge/Rod Stewart) & Ernie Watts (Frank Zappa/The Rolling

5.  Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) feat. Johnny Winter

6.  (I Want To Take You) Higher feat. Jeff Beck

7.  Hot Fun In The Summertime feat. Bootsy Collins

8.  Dance To The Music (Extended Mix)

9.  Plain Jane

10.  His Eye Is On The Sparrow

11.  Get Away

12.  Dance To The Music (Club Mix)

13.  Family Affair (Dubstep Mix)

14.  Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) (Electro Club Mix)
