Singles Going Steady: New Album Reviews Week Of 12-10-12

Jesus Piece – Game – This is Game's second killer album in a row and with the entire rap world here to join him, there was every chance his born again move was gonna be a major disaster. But goddamit if it doesn't pay off on song after song, from game changer title track (in which he name checks Coltrane for obvious reasons) to "Celebration" with its advise we've heard before ("get high"), this seems to find Jesus in its sinfulness – Grade: A

Vicious Lies And Dangerous Rumors – Big Boi – Eccentric hip hop genius who isn't actually a genius and so can be all over the place. A little more self-restraint and we might have one more "Bombs Or Baghdad" but we don't get that. We do get "Shutterbugg" on late track "Gossip" if anybody actually gets that far – Grade: B

Unorthodox Jukebox – Bruno Mars – Except for "Gorilla", this doesn't kick it hard enough. It hasn't the sweetness of Doo Wop, and its best tracks, say the disco work out :Treasure" are food enough", but its lesser lights, smash hit "Locked Out Of Heaven" for one, are simply depressing. The problem: It isn't enough fun – Grade: B-

Don't Be S.A..F.E. – Trinidad James – I haven't bought a latest hip hop sensation hype in years, completely passed on ASAP Rocky (though rock nyc didn't) but this guy I will absolutely buy into. Sure, hit "All Gold Everything" has a Wuish sample and then moves, but it is the fun fast stuff that gets to me. Especially drug ode "One More Molly" – Grade: B+

Almeira – Lifehouse – Unlistenable pop rock by as member of the commercial based rock front. Lame in world where Daughtry exists- Grade: D+
